The huge island of Papua-Newguinea is home to a great number of highly diversified indigenous tribes. Many of them had no contact with modern civilization until recently and some tribes may not have been discovered even today. Politically, the island is divided in the eastern and independent Papua New Guinea and the western part that has been annexed to Indonesia (West Papua or Irian Jaya).
